Project New Orleans

In March 2008, Purple Valley Films went to New Orleans for a documentary project. Our 8-person team was involved in community services like house-painting and planting sunflowers to remove lead from the soil. We filmed images of destructions and desolation almost 3 years after Katrina. Moreover, we talked to people — ordinary folks, kids in the neighborhood, homeless people at Tent City, pastors that helped the communities to rebuild, inspirational figures that appeared on CNN and Newsweek (Malik Rahim who founded Common Ground Relief) (and almost got to talk to Brat Pitt!!) — and filmed the interviews, in the hope that our documentary may motivate college students like us to visit New Orleans personally and help out in the reconstruction, be it physical labor or simply doing office work. We hope to spread the message that even almost 3 years after Katrina, New Orleans is still a mess because the government is inefficient; that people there need volunteers. Read more

Special Event: Cartune Xprez 2008

October 08, 08 by ariel

Where: Paresky Theater
When: Friday, October 17th 2008, 7:30pm

A night of mind melting tripped out animated videos and interactive psychedelic multi-media performances presented by Portland, Oregon musical group Hooliganship.

The 2008 AMRCAN Fall tour is an 80-minute travelling roadshow including shorts by artists Bruce Bickford, Shana Moulton, Adrian Freeman Takeshi Murata, Paper Rad and more. Alongside this cartoon theater will be a performance by Hooliganship a grunge rock inspired dance-off duo that combines highly orchestrated cell phone tunes with freak-out animations for a sensory-overload multimedia party.
They will perform their most recent piece entitled Realer in which audiences strap on a pair of 3D glasses to watch them wreak 3D havoc with a televised parade. This program provides a rare opportunity to see videos by emerging and internationally known artists.

Schedule

9/5 No screening
9/12 Animal Crackers
Groucho Marx plays African explorer Capt. Spaulding, who’s just returned to the states to inflict comic carnage on the highfalutin party of society matron Mrs. Rittenhouse (Margaret Dumont). Groucho regales the partygoers with tales of his adventures in the wild (”I shot an elephant in my pajamas; how he got there I’ll never know” and so on). Meanwhile, Harpo chases blondes, and Chico connives.
9/19 Raging Bull
Robert De Niro won the Oscar for his portrayal of self-destructive boxer Jake LaMotta in Martin Scorsese’s widely acclaimed biopic. De Niro’s powerful performance, combined with Scorsese’s black-and-white realism, paints a raw portrait of a tormented soul unable to control his violent outbursts. Cathy Moriarty and Joe Pesci also star.
9/26 Bringing Up Baby
Love blooms for a hapless scientist and an unstoppable heiress in Howard Hawks’s classic screwball comedy. Out to win the heart of paleontologist David (Cary Grant), heiress Susan (Katharine Hepburn) lures him to her home. The hilarity begins when Susan’s dog steals David’s prize dinosaur bone and her pet leopard, Baby, is mistaken for a zoo escapee. One madcap adventure follows another as they try to save Baby — and ultimately fall in love.
