We own an 8-ft ProAm camera crane. If you would like to check it out, contact Danny Y. Huang at yh1 [at] williams [dot] edu. Here is a short film that I made entirely using this crane.
We are producing a music video for the Williams Student Symphony this Sunday (May 3), from 1:30 – 4 PM.
This project defies conventional one-camera-taping-the-concert style. It tells a story, both on-stage and off-stage, with a touch of personality and intimacy by focusing on the human details. The project involves a four-camera set-up, with one camera on a 8-ft crane, one doing a long shot and two others, hand-held, picking up detailed actions from various musicians. We may do a short, improvised interview with some of the musicians.
The production time is from 1:30 – 4 PM this coming Sunday, May 3. We’re setting up and planning all the shots from 1:30 – 3 PM. The concert goes from 3 – 4 PM. If you have time, you can stay back for 15 minutes and help out with cleaning up.
Contact Danny Y. Huang at yh1 [at] williams [dot] edu if you’re interested in this project. You’ll not be paid, but you’ll be rewarded with a thrilling (and stressful) live, large-scale production experience.
April is our Month of Chinese Queer Films, in which we would like to highlight the lives of the homosexual in modern Chinese society, especially given that homosexuality is still widely considered a taboo topic in the culture.

Russian director Andrei Tarkovsky opens his final film with friends gathering to celebrate Alexander’s (Erland Josephson) birthday. Alexander, a journalist and former actor and philosopher, tells his little son how worried he is about the lack of spirituality of modern mankind. In the night of his birthday, the third world war breaks out. In his despair Alexander turns himself in a prayer to God, offering him everything to have the war not happened at all.
The film won four awards at the Cannes Film Festival, including the Grand Prix.
Listen closely and you can actually hear the stress hormones pumping through the bodies of the characters in Annie Hall. Woody Allen’s real, funny ode to love among twitchy city dwellers scooped up Oscars for Best Picture, Best Direction, Best Actress (Diane Keaton) and Best Screenplay. And don’t miss cameos of not-yet-stars Jeff Goldblum, Shelley Duvall and Sigourney Weaver.
We are working with Sports Information to provide live webcasts for athletic events in Williams. This student-run service is considered as a campus job and you’ll be paid by Sports Information.
During a major athletic event, a production crew will typically consist of two camera operators and one technical director that manages the audio/video switchboard. Four to five people may be needed for one production, and they are rotated during half-time. Don’t worry if you know nothing about video cameras or video switchboards — we’ll provide the training.
Interested students should email Danny Y. Huang at yh1 [at] williams [dot] edu. Please include your name, class year, and phone number.
NOTE: You will not be paid if you meet any of the following criteria:
You are a freshman already with a campus job.
You are a freshman without a campus job and you do not receive Financial Aid.

From the 1960s to early 1990s, Germany saw the emergence of a new generation of innovative and odd directors. These filmmakers created work that challenged what they saw as the “stagnant” presentation of gender in the established German cinema. The impact of New German cinema (”Junger Deutscher Film“) can be seen in the work of contemporary queer filmmakers even to this day. In this course, we will be watching 3 films (specifically from the 1970s) that deal with issues of sexuality in New German cinema. Each film screening will be preceded by segments from Ernst Hofbauer’s “School Girl Report”, an extremely popular German exploitation film. Screenings are to be followed by informal discussion with topics ranging from transgender representations to feminist reactions to sadomasochistic romanticism.
